DAET, CamNorte: To raise awareness on the importance of blood donation, the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) provincial chapter here has mobilized some 5,000 runners Saturday who ran from the Capitol grounds in the town center here to Bagasbas Beach.

Josie Tallado, chairwoman of the PNRC Camarines Norte Chapter, commended the cooperation of various sectors in the province that she said gave a final push for the establishment of a blood bank to cater to donors here.

Tallado recalled that when she took over the leadership of the PNRC here the chapter was totally inactive and the province was one of the local government units (LGUs) with no blood bank or donors.

She said constituents of the province have to depend on blood supply from Naga City for their medical needs because there was no blood bank here.

Tallado said that in partnership with the provincial government of Camarines Norte the multimillion-peso blood bank will finally enable constituents here to access blood upon demand.

She said blood donors are entitled to get free blood for medical purposes.

Tallado said the blood donors will be given blood donor’s card which can be used when the owner or any member of the family needs blood.

“We are encouraging healthy individuals to donate blood to the PNRC because they will be given priority every time they need blood,” she said.

The blood donation program of the PNRC operates in accordance with the provisions of the National Blood Services Act of 1994, in cooperation with the Department of Health and the Philippine Blood Coordination Council.

It is aimed at providing safe blood to the country through PNRC’s active role in advocacy, promotion of voluntary blood donation, donor retention and care, and the operation of network of 74 blood bank services all over the country. – Bicol Mail
