THE New People’s Army (NPA) in Mambulao has blocked the construction of a P40 million steel bridge at Baranggay Sta Cruz, Mambulao, CamNorte after the private contractor failed to pay the so-called “revolutionary tax”.
Reports reaching MWBuzz said the private contractor has been making losses and could not raise the money demanded by the local communists.
Mayor Ricarte Padilla has told the Daet-based contractor to negotiate with the NPA to allow him to finish the bridge, which was started last September.
Sources said the NPA has “politely considered” the contractor’s request after being informed of the consequences on the local people if the bridge is not built before the rainy season begins in May.
The river at Sta Cruz usually overflows its banks during prolonged rains and would flood the baranggay and prevent the people to move around.
With the bridge, the residents could cross the river and get access to the nearest road where town-bound tricycles are available.
Rerouting has been made in the area where the bridge project is taking place.
Padilla has threatened the contractor with a legal suit if he fails to finish the bridge as required.
