NAGA CITY: In a weekend news conference, a lady mayor of a Camarines Sur town complained of shabby treatment from the Tulfo brother, hosts of the “T-Three” talk show, during a live interview that was aired over national TV network, Channel 5, last Friday (Feb. 22).
Pasacao Town Mayor Asuncion Villamante Arcenio denounced the Tulfo brothers for lack of journalism ethics and bad manners in the conduct of a live interview regarding a problematic bridge in barangay Caranan in this town.
The Tulfos appeared to be acting on a complaint from a barangay captain who was a political adversary of the mayor.
She told reporters here that one of the Tulfos started the interview saying, “hihintayin mo pa bang may mamatay,“ with Tulfo referring to the damaged Sarimao hanging bridge linking the provincial road in barangay Caranan to a sitio.
The said bridge was built by then Gov Luis R. Villafuerte and was damaged by a typhoon in 2011.
According to Arcenio. she was explaining on TV that the local government unit had already included in the 2013 municipal budget some P2 million for the repair of the foundation of the hanging bridge, but her statements were being cut short on air by the Tulfo brothers.
She said the repair of the bridge was earlier appealed for funding to the DPWH but rejected because the bridge was part of a provincial road.
She claimed to have waited for over a year for promised calamity assistance from the national government that never came, so they finally decided to include funds the repairs in the municipal budget this year.
Arcenio said that with barely P50 million municipal budget for 2013, she was short on cash because she had already repaired another damaged bridge that connects four villages and of much more critical importance than the Sarimao hanging bridge in barangay Caranan.
The Mayor lamented that the Tulfos insinuated official neglect on her part when in fact the complaining barangay captain of Caranan, a certain Oliva, knew of the meager funds that can allocated for the repair of the bridge from the town’s 20% Development fund.
Arcenio’s camp alleges that a team sent by the Tulfos’ went to Caranan to take footage of the bridge and talked to barangay captain Oliva, but the researchers never bothered to get the mayor’s side on the issue.
Arcenio now urges both the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), or the Kapisanan Ng Brodkasters Sa Pilipinas (KBP) to enforce disciplinary actions on talk-show programs that are not meant to clarify issues but rather solely intent on discrediting and humiliating their guests to favor certain patrons.
Local sources in Pasacao town also revealed that the heated political rivalry between CamSur Gov. “L- Ray” Villafuerte and incumbent 2nd district Congressman Diosdado “Dato” Arroyo have affected some mayors who inadvertently fall prey to political intrigues.
