AT LEAST 22,000
bakawan tree seedlings were planted on Sunday at Barangay Sta. Milagrosa,
Mambulao, CamNorte.
Councilor Artem
Andaya told MWBuzz about 300 volunteer-planters converged at the barangay for
the gig.
He said Mayor Ricarte
“Dong” Padilla has expressed thanks to the volunteers who were sent by their
respective organizations.
The tree-planting
activity was spearheaded by barangay chairman Edgar Arjite, with support from
the Pantawid Pamilya recipients of Sta Milagrosa; World Vision partner families
of Sta Milagrosa; Ina ng Buhay Cooperative of Sta Milagrosa; Kabayan Action
Group; JPNHS Batch 88 led by Fritz
Dayondon; 49th Infantry (Good Samaritans) Batallion, 9th Infantry Division,
Phil. Army led by Lt Col Michael M
Buhat; Philippine Army reservists and ROTC students; and
Bantay-Dagat of
Mambulao.
So far, the
tree-planting program has surpassed the 100,000-tree mark.
Padilla aims to plant
about one million trees in three years, covering 2,000 hectares of denuded
mangrove forests and upland forests.
Andaya has appealed
for sponsorship in the propagation of tree seedlings.
“It only costs one
peso to raise a tree-planting material,” he said.
He also said they are
rushing up the germination bakawan seedlings as the fruiting season of the
species will end this month.
Andaya, the local
government’s tree-planting czar, said they will plant trees at least once a
week.
