Despite life’s glitches …  This woman can still smile for the camera as she busies herself baiting close to a hundred fish hooks for casting in the following night’s fishing expedition at the Mambulao Bay. Her fisherman-husband’s daily catch just barely meets her household needs as fish has become difficult to find, prompting him and the rest of other local fishermen to venture out of the municipal fishing zone where better catch could be had. They said that the bay has been overfished aside from being severely polluted by wastes from gold operations around the community. The mining wastes, they claim, are being dumped into the bay but the concerned government agencies such as the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), Mines and Geosciences Bureau and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) seem unmindful of the ecological problems in the community. – MWBuzzpic by ALFREDO P HERNANDEZ
