Albay bans plastic, styrofoam

Banned, finally, for the good of all ...!

LEGAZPI CITY: Starting June, 15 towns and three cities in Albay will ban the use of plastic packaging for goods and groceries.

The Albay anti-plastic ordinance penalizes violators with fines ranging from P1,000 up to P5,000 and cancellation of business permits.

The ordinance prohibits the use of plastic bags, styrofoam and other non-biodegradable synthetic packaging materials for goods sold to consumers in malls, public markets, groceries and other commercial establishments.

Instead, it encourages the use of recyclable bags and biodegradable materials such as paper, buri and abaca.

The ordinance takes effect after a year of moratorium; it was signed by Albay Gov. Joey S Salceda in February last year.

Salceda, an advocate of change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, said banning plastic and styrofoam materials supports disaster risk reduction since these pollutants clog canals and waterways and cause destructive flooding.

The ordinance was authored by Albay Provincial Board member Arnold Embestro.
Environmentalists have hailed Albay’s move to ban plastics and styrofoam use since aside from being non-biodegradable, they also emit carbon and toxic fumes when burned. - Malaya

How can we survive without styrofoam packaging ...?

  1. Banning the usage of Styrofoam is unwise. How to recycle waste Styrofoam and reduce the pollution is worth thinking. Recycling Styrofoam and reuse them to make delicate frames is a good way. I recommend INTCO recycling who provides Styrofoam recycling solution with no charge, encourage people to collect waste Styrofoam and promise to purchase back these compacted polystyrene.
