Mt Asog, near the City of Iriga, is one
of the most popular destination for adventure trekkers.
IRIGA CITY: The Camarines Sur chapter of
the KBP and the local government unit (LGU) of Iriga City joined hands to plant
1,500 trees at the shoulders of Mt Asog in Barangay Ilian as part of the
simultaneous tree-planting event of the KBP national directorate all over the
country on Oct 13.
Elmer Abad, president of KBP Camarines Sur,
declared the event successful with more than 1,000 participants from schools,
the city hall, fire and police departments, and the Army.
“Our efforts here may be a small
contribution to the government’s greening program but for every tree that will
survive and grow is a long-term contribution to the ecological regeneration of
our surroundings,” Abad explained.
He said the big turnout of volunteers
from different institutions in Iriga City is credited to Mayor Madelaine
Alfelor Gazmen who orchestrated the mobilization of participants which had
exceeded the expected number.
Abad said Mayor Gazmen pledged for the
continuing maintenance of planted tree seedlings until they survive and grow.
Mayor Gazmen said KBP’s tree-planting
event was in line with the environment program of the city which included
reforestation projects at Mt Asog.
She said her administration has
continuing efforts to replant with trees bald areas in Mt. Asog as part of the
goal of regenerating the biodiversity of the mountain aside from initiating
mitigation measures against flooding.
