No case filed vs trader who shot wife

LEGAZPI CITY: Police have not filed criminal charges against a wealthy businessman who while suffering from Parkinson’s disease allegedly shot his wife last Sept 22.

The wife, Jeanette Orosco Chan, 40, survived a lone Calibrer .40 bullet wound on her left abdomen.

She was discharged fom the hospital a week later. Her husband was identified as Danny B Chan, owner of a big construction firm here.

Sources close to the family said both the victim and the suspect reached an agreement to settle the case amicably which include their separation as husband and wife and division of properties.

Police report said Chan surrendered to the police after the incident. He was reportedly detained for 36 hours and released without any charges filed.

Legazpi Police Chief Supt Oscar Regala would not answer text messages about  the latest development while Albay Deputy Police Provincial Director Supt. Paulino Belga confirmed he has not received any report if the Legazpi police had filed the case.

Some of those in the legal profession assailed the police for not filing the frustrated murder case saying the amicable settlement reached by the couple was purely on the civil aspect while the criminal aspect could not be compromised since it is the People of the Philippines who are the interested party in the case.

They also wondered how a person afflicted with Parkinson’s disease could have a license to possess and carry firearm. – Bicol Mail
